TIP OF THE WEEK

Over time, there has been numerous diets to come in and out of popularity, just to name a few…

  • Grapefruit diet
  • 3 –Hour diet
  • Cabbage Soup diet
  • Fat Flush Diet
  • French Women Don’t Get Fat Diet (yes this is a real diet)
  • Atkin’s Diet
  • Jenny Craig

…The list goes on and on!

It seems every person that buys into these diets are looking for a secret to weight loss, well here’s the secret. “Eat well balanced meals frequently throughout the day and exercise regularly!”  Crazy, right?! To think, we’ve had this answer for years but fail to follow this advice.

Let me break some things down for you so we are all crystal clear on how the human body functions.

The human body (I don’t care who you are or how you think your body works) requires a certain amount of Protein, Carbohydrates and Fat. Yes! All three of those macros are required. Sure, you need fiber, vitamins, water etc. But for this article the focus is on the three big ones. Within those three groups they each have a smaller subgroup, QUALITY! The quality of Protein, Carbohydrate and Fat also affect your body tremendously.

Now, when you start buying into these “fad diets”, you begin to deprive your body of one, if not two, of these major macronutrients. For instance, the south beach diet. You are told to eat extremely low or no carbohydrates at all, while cranking up the protein intake. Here is a big no-no in my eyes. What people don’t understand is the human body needs carbohydrates (which break down into a glucose product) to function optimally on all cylinders. Your Cerebral Spinal Fluid (CSF) has a make-up which contains glucose (broken down carbohydrates). When you begin to deprive your body of carbohydrates, what do you think happens to your CSF? That is just one example.

Don’t get me wrong, these so called “diets” accomplish their goal, lose weight. Although, what most people fail to think about…you are not aiming to lose body weight, you are aiming to lose body fat. YES! I will repeat that again in case you missed it the first time around. You are aiming to lose body fat, not body weight! Weight loss is easy, don’t drink water for four hours, sit in the sauna, fast for a day. These will all accomplish the same thing. A decrease in body fat on the other hand, is much more difficult (which is why most people result to these quick, easy weight loss diets). Fat loss requires a sound nutrition plan, a consistent workout regimen and the right state of mind to accomplish your goal.

So to sum this up, do diets actually work? NO! Do they accomplish what they claim too? Yes! If your goal is to lower your overall weight on the scale, then by all means, grab that magazine at the checkout stand and follow their advice on how to lose ten pounds in two days. If your goal is to have a lean body, low body fat and an increase in longevity, then do it the right way! The “hard” way.
